What It Means: Washington Shuts the Door on DeepSeek

By Claude W. Hargrove, Editor in Chief

The federal government has told its civilian agencies to stop using DeepSeek, the Chinese artificial intelligence company, and to stop buying anything built on it. The order from the Department of Homeland Security went on file for public inspection Monday and was set to appear in the Federal Register on Tuesday. Here is what it does, and why it matters beyond Washington.

First, the reach. Agencies must take DeepSeek products off their computer systems and may no longer buy them through the usual government catalogs and online markets. The rule does not stop at DeepSeek's own app. It also covers outside products and services that were built using DeepSeek's technology, which is the part software vendors will be reading closely this week.
